Sparking creativity using extrinsic rewards: A <scp>self‐determination</scp> theory perspective

The relationship between extrinsic rewards and creativity has been subject to ongoing debate within the human resource management literatures. More research on mechanisms boundary conditions called for. In this study, using 187 employee-supervisor dyads in an electronics manufacturing company, we investigated how when creativity-contingent (CER) may foster among employees. Drawing self-determination theory, hypothesized, found that employee intrinsic motivation mediated CER creativity. This was strongest employees rated their leader-member exchange (LMX) as high. findings reveal important role of guiding employees' stimulating identification LMX a moderator uncovers crucial relationship. Theoretical practical implications are discussed.
